Exceeded vs Far Exceeded

The line between Exceeded and Far Exceeded is the leadership multiplier and the enduring effect. Did the impact last past the moment? Did the NCO's leadership change what the unit could do, not just what they did?

// 01Read the two paragraphs side by side

The Exceeded definition and the Far Exceeded definition share most of their structure. What changes — and the difference between them is not a step in degree; it is a change in kind.

"(3) Exceeded standard. Rated NCO performs above the required Army standards and organizational goals of leader competencies and attributes; this NCO and his or her Soldiers often take disciplined initiative in applying leader competencies and attributes; results have an immediate impact on the mission, their Soldiers, the unit, and the Army; this level of performance is not common, typically demonstrated by the upper third of NCOs of the same grade."

"(4) Far exceeded standard. Rated NCO performs extraordinarily above the required Army standards and organizational goals of leader competencies and attributes; leadership enables Soldiers and unit to far surpass required organizational and Army standards; demonstrated performance epitomizes excellence in all aspects; this NCO and his or her Soldiers consistently take disciplined initiative in applying leader competencies and attributes; results have an immediate impact and enduring effect on the mission, their Soldiers, the unit, and the Army; demonstrated by the best of the upper third of NCOs of the same grade."

Checkpoint

Which two phrases appear ONLY in the Far Exceeded definition, not Exceeded?

  • "appropriate initiative" + "positive impact"
  • "often take disciplined initiative" + "immediate impact"
  • "consistently take disciplined initiative" + "immediate impact and enduring effect" correct
  • "upper third" + "best of the upper third"

The verbatim shift is "often" → "consistently" and "immediate impact" → "immediate impact AND enduring effect." Both upper-third phrases appear (one in each tier — "upper third" in Exceeded, "best of the upper third" in Far Exceeded), so option 4 is not the distinguishing pair.

// 02The enduring-effect marker

Enduring effect is the marker that catches more bullets than the others. The question to ask: did this work change how the unit operates after the action ended? An SOP that is still in use, a process that the next cycle inherited, a metric that sustained — those are enduring effects.

A single great event that ended with the moment is not enduring effect. "Coordinated brigade range operations supporting 1,400 qualifications" is Exceeded if it happened well. "Built the SOP now used as the division template, qual rates sustained up 18% through the next quarter" is Far Exceeded — the unit kept the gain after the action ended.

Checkpoint

Which bullet hits the enduring-effect marker?

  • "Led the company through the EXEVAL with zero deficiencies"
  • "Coordinated brigade resupply during the ITX"
  • "Built the consolidated ammo SOP now used as the division template; division qual rates sustained up 18% through the next quarter" correct
  • "Performed at the highest level during the rating period"

The third option says the SOP "is now used as the division template" and the qual rate "sustained" past the action. The first two describe single events without language about lasting change. The fourth has no specific past action.

// 03The leadership multiplier marker

The Far Exceeded text says "leadership enables Soldiers and unit to far surpass required organizational and Army standards." This is the marker that distinguishes Far Exceeded from a strong solo performer.

The question to ask: did this NCO's work change what OTHER PEOPLE achieved, not just what the NCO themselves achieved? "Mentored six junior NCOs into board appearances; three earned position-of-the-quarter," "Built the cross-platoon training cycle now leading peer platoons to early certification" — these describe leadership that multiplied across other Soldiers.

A bullet that describes only the NCO's own output, however impressive, does not hit the multiplier. Marker 4 wants downstream effects on other Soldiers.

Checkpoint

Which bullet best signals the leadership multiplier?

  • "Achieved 600 ACFT for the third consecutive year"
  • "Mentored six junior NCOs into board appearances; three earned position-of-the-quarter" correct
  • "Led the company through the brigade EXEVAL"
  • "Has the potential to multiply leadership effects across the unit"

The second option describes the NCO's leadership creating outcomes for OTHER PEOPLE (six junior NCOs achieving board appearances and recognition). The first is solo performance. The third is event leadership without multiplier evidence. The fourth uses forbidden potential language.

// 04The two-marker minimum

Far Exceeded bullets should hit at least two of the four markers from lesson 2.4 (extraordinary, consistent, enduring, multiplier). One marker usually reads as Exceeded with extra adjectives. Two markers fire as a real Far Exceeded signal.

One exception outranks the count: a single selective, echelon-level win (Drill Sergeant of the Year, Best Squad at division, NCO of the Year) is best-of-the-upper-third evidence by construction and anchors Far Exceeded on its own.

When reviewing a Far Exceeded draft, count the markers honestly. If only one is honestly present and the event is not a selective win of that class, the bullet supports Exceeded, not Far Exceeded.

// 05Worked examples

Worked example · Exceeded

A SSG coordinated the brigade-level ammo resupply during a single ITX rotation; resupply ran without incident.

Coordinated brigade-level ammo resupply during the ITX without incident; supported 1,400 qualifications across six companies.

Brigade scope hits Marker 1 (extraordinary for a SSG). But this is one well-executed tasking, not a selective echelon-level win, with no enduring effect and no multiplier language. Lands at Exceeded honestly, not Far Exceeded.

Worked example · Far Exceeded

Same SSG, full rating period. He did not just coordinate the ITX resupply once — he built the SOP that the brigade now uses across every exercise, and trained six other company supply NCOs to run it.

Built the brigade ammo resupply SOP now used as the division template; trained six company supply NCOs who ran the next ITX without rater involvement; division qual rates sustained up 18% through the next quarter.

Enduring effect (SOP in use, gain sustained). Leadership multiplier (six NCOs trained, division-wide impact). Two markers fire. Strong Far Exceeded.

Worked example · Far Exceeded

A SFC consistently ran the brigade integration cycle across all four rating-period quarters, rebuilt the cross-company training calendar that the division adopted, and mentored seven E-5/E-6s into NCOPD instructor roles.

Consistently led brigade integration across all four rating-period quarters; rebuilt cross-company training calendar adopted as the division standard; mentored seven NCOs into NCOPD instructor roles, three on first-look; brigade readiness metric sustained at division-leading levels through subsequent rotations.

Three markers fire. Marker 2 (consistently across four quarters). Marker 3 (calendar as standard, metric sustained). Marker 4 (seven NCOs into instructor roles). Strong Far Exceeded.

// 06Practice: name the tier

Read each bullet, decide the tier it honestly supports, then check the answer underneath.

Answer · Exceeded

Led the company through the brigade EXEVAL with zero deficiencies on all 47 evaluated tasks.

Markers: extraordinary performance

Zero deficiencies on a 47-task EXEVAL is extraordinary — Marker 1. But it is one event rather than a named competitive win, with no enduring effect and no multiplier. Lands at Exceeded.

Answer · Exceeded

Often coordinated cross-squad training across the rating period; raised company qual rate from 78% to 91% within the cycle.

Markers: often take disciplined initiative; immediate impact

Frequency marker plus quantified before-and-after. Two Exceeded markers — strong Exceeded. No multiplier, no enduring effect, so does not climb to Far Exceeded.

Answer · Far Exceeded

Built the brigade ammo SOP now used as the division template; trained six company supply NCOs who ran the next ITX without rater involvement; division qual rates sustained up 18% through the next quarter.

Markers: enduring effect; leadership multiplier; extraordinary performance

SOP now in use is enduring effect. Six NCOs trained and division-wide impact through their work is the multiplier. Division-scale work is extraordinary for the typical NCO grade. Three markers.

Answer · Exceeded

Took disciplined initiative coordinating the platoon's range cycle.

Markers: disciplined initiative

"Disciplined initiative" is Exceeded language. No multiple-cycle frequency, no extraordinary scope, no enduring effect, no multiplier. Zero Far Exceeded markers. Lands at Exceeded — and a thin one since there is no quantified impact.

Answer · Far Exceeded

Consistently rebuilt the unit NCOPD calendar across four quarters; mentored eleven E-4s and E-5s into expanded responsibility roles, six on first-look; calendar adopted as brigade template through the next training cycle.

Markers: consistent initiative; leadership multiplier; enduring effect

"Consistently across four quarters" — Marker 2. "Eleven NCOs / six on first-look" — Marker 4. "Adopted as brigade template through the next cycle" — Marker 3. Three markers.

Answer · Met

Performs extraordinarily above standard in all aspects of leadership.

Uses Far Exceeded vocabulary but describes no specific past action, no impact, no timeframe. A board reads it as the rater quoting the regulation back at them. Without a concrete past-action anchor, the bullet cannot support a tier above Met (and a thin Met at that).

// 07What most get wrong

The most common failure: a rater writes a bullet describing one impressive event ("Led the company through the EXEVAL with zero deficiencies") and checks Far Exceeded. A routine event executed superbly, one time, without enduring effect is at best Exceeded. The board reads the bullet, doesn't see the enduring effect, and either downgrades the perceived tier in their head or treats the rater as someone who inflates.

The exception, and it matters: a single selective, echelon-level win CAN carry Far Exceeded on its own. Drill Sergeant of the Year. Best Squad at division. NCO of the Year. Those are "demonstrated by the best of the upper third" by construction: the Army itself rendered the best-of-peers verdict when it picked the winner. Nobody wins one without performing extraordinarily above the standard.

The rewrite move: for every bullet you intend to support a Far Exceeded check, ask three questions. (1) What changed in the unit AFTER this action that's still in place? (2) Whose performance improved as a downstream effect? (3) Is the event itself a named competitive win at echelon? If all three answers are no, you have an Exceeded bullet, not a Far Exceeded one.
